HONDURAS AND ITS BAY ISLANDS -- A Mariner's Guide
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Heron Island Media (02 November, 1998)
Average review score:

Essential reading for the Bay Islands sailorThe most comprehensive, accurate and thoughtful guide to the Bay Islands available to the cruising sailor. Well researched and well written. The charts, while accurate and plentiful, need work. I hope to see more areas covered by Capt. Rhodes in the future.

Hospital: The Hidden Lives of a Medical Center Staff
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (December, 1982)
Average review score:

The inside scoopIf you want to really know what goes on at the hospital, read this book. You will never go into a hospital by yourself again. Mister Medved talked to a lot of hospital people and they told him how they live every day, what they think and what they do. I was very surprised. I think you will be, too. Get this book before you have to visit someone you love in the hospital. Get it before you have to go. You'll be glad you did.

A Hound Bays in Ellsworth
Published in Hardcover by Vantage Press (October, 1991)
Average review score:

One chapter in here is about me...Many, many years ago this author was my English teacher in Virginia. I read most of this book back then - it was serialized in a hunting magazine if I recall - and am buying a copy here now. If you are a fan of hunting hounds and the legends and history that accompany such a culture, then you will want this book. I'm the kid with the horn-rimmed glasses; though the glasses are gone the awe and wonder associated with new experiences has never faded.

How To Be a Jerk In Bristol Bay
Published in Paperback by Eddie Tern Pr ()
Average review score:

Because we need comedy to make it through the season...This book had me absolutely howling with laughter every page I read. Each hillaroius skit and story made me think of one of the many fishermen who I've met in Dutch Harbor and the area who fish Bristol Bay and anywhere in the chain. Any one who fishes there, observes there, or simply loves the place and the unique lifestyle should own a copy of this book. It should rest comfortably in every wheelhouse because it IS every skipper. I loved it so much I am buying a copy for my boyfriend who is most certainly represented in a few pages. :) Life up there is colored with comedy, because we all need it to make a hard lifestyle bearable and sometimes it's just so funny out on the water that you can't imagine ever wanting to be anywhere else -- this book captures those moments perfectly and satirizes all the amusing aspects of our lives from money hungry fishermen's wives to drunken navigation decisions (and their occasional disasterous results) in the harbor. I just wish it was longer. You'll love it if you love fishing. You'll love it if you hate NMFS and ADF&G (who doesn't). You'll love it if you love the Elbow Room. You'll love it whether you're a deck hand or a skipper (well, as long as you can laugh at yourself). Enjoy.

I Went to the Bay
Published in Hardcover by Kids Can Press (March, 1999)
Average review score:

Beautiful drawings, educational yet fun for little onesMy 2 1/2 year old really enjoys this book. I believe it isaimed at the 4 - 8 year old set, but even younger ones can appreciatethe colorful illustrations and the natural settings and wildlife. They learn a little about nature ("I saw a loon and heard its cry; a tiny hummingbird flew by"). It's very peaceful - perfect before bedtime or naps. And children enjoy the fact that the little boy can never spot the frogs that the reader can see (they're usually hidden behind a rock). My son loves the last page when the little boy says "I wondered if all the creatures would say, I saw a human being today." He likes for me to name several animals and people so that he can label them as human beings or not. I've read this book to my son twice a day for over a month now and I'm not sick of it, which is definitely worth 5 stars in my book!

In English Ways: The Movement of Societies and the Transferal of English Local Law and Custom to Massachusetts Bay in the Seventeenth Century
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (February, 1981)
Average review score:

A Detailed and Well-Written StudyIn this work, David Grayson Allen examines how Puritan communities brought the economic and social structures of towns in Old England to towns in New England. Allen details how different English communities rebuilt themselves in America. Allen then briefly outlines what factors ultimately encouraged a degree of homogeneity among these distinctive New England towns.
For even more statistical and personal detail on the migration to New England, see Roger Thompson, Mobility and Migration: East Anglian Founders of New England, 1629-1640. See also David Hackett Fischer, Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America, which examines the transference of four different regional cultures of England to four different regions of America. Fischer studies Puritan Massachusetts as the seedbed of one such regional American culture. On the Puritans, consult any number of books on the subject by Edmund S. Morgan.

Islands of the Mid-Maine Coast: Penobscot Bay
Published in Paperback by Tilbury House Publishers (June, 2003)
Average review score:

SIMPLY AWESOMEANYBODY (and for once I mean it) who is at all interested in the Maine coast line, plans to visit Maine, has dreamed of cruising the Maine Archipelago, is interested in history and ecology of the northeastertn U.S. etc. owes it to themselves to order this book (and indeed the whole series). Lovingly written, beautifully illustrated with impossible-to-find historical photos and maps, this series by the greatest living (and probably greatest ever) expert on the history of Maine islands belongs in your boat, belongs on your desk, belongs by your bed. I try never to go Downeast without a stack o' Mclane (much to the bemusement of my skipper) and have spent mant happy afternoons on islands with my students working out just from where a particular photo was taken a century earlier. Beautifully written, with a nice mix of stories, geneologies, and a real eye for the land, this has been literally the "life's work" of a wonderful couple. All of us who know, study, and love these islands have a deep debt of gratitude to the McLanes.
